At press time, Apple’s latest line of 15″ 1.67GHz PowerBooks has received a myriad of user reports regarding faulty batteries. Although, touted as a firmware issue, Apple representatives were unavailable for comment but its seems that there have been reports of batteries not charging among the recent batch of 15″ PowerBooks.
To find out whether you have an affected unit, put your PowerBook with the screen facing down and battery facing toward you. Plug in the power cable and if the battery is functioning correctly, during charging the 5 LED lights on the base of your battery should run in sequence from the one closest to the power check button. If nothing occurs and the head of the power cable which is attached to your PowerBook maintains a green glow, its likely you have an affected unit.
Users with defective units are advised to return their PowerBooks to an Apple dealer or Apple Service Provider for an immediate battery exchange. Failing which, no return will likely be possible post expiry of the initial one year warranty that comes with the PowerBook.
