Podcasting Since August 2004

Thanks to a bloke named Adam Curry who has been involved extensively in Internet technology development, we have had podcasting since August 2004. If you’ve used AvantGoon a Palm PDA platform, podcasting is akin to AvantGo in functionality but instead of downloading written content to your portable device, podcasting allows you to download audio broadcasts to your iPod or other MP3 portable device.

It may be slightly foreign to some why we would want to have delayed broadcasts stored onto our portable devices but it appears that this trend is catching on, regardless what some might think.

The technology levies off existing RSS 2.0 technology by including enclosures that piggy back on the RSS code to bring you audio broadcasts, affectionately dubbed podcasts.

What you’ll need to receive a podcast is any podcast receiver applications that can be found on the Internet. Most are shareware but if you really must listen to podcasts of your favourite radio programme then, spend the dosh and register your podcast receiver application. Armed with a podcast receiver application, search for the desired podcast and download it into your favourite music application, eg iTunes and sync it to your iPod… its that simple.

Not surprisingly, the evolution is unstoppable and podcasting is now moving into the mobile celular phone market, with applications like iPodderSP leading the charge.
